Fragile

IMG_0766

Because I was fragile
And nobody wanted to know
Not even me
Especially not me

Who wants to talk about
Being broken?
Lay out their shattered pieces
For display and rearrangement?

Because nobody wants your
Sad, sad songs or woe is me’s
Your darkness and shadows
Your thoughts of razor blades and sleeping pills

Because I thought you could see it
And when you didn’t ask
I thought I needed to hide it
I didn’t want to ruin the fun
Your fun, their fun, everybody’s fun

Because I was fragile
And nobody wanted to know
Not even me
Especially not me

Give Your Troubles…

Give your troubles to me
my friend
let me tend them
for a while
Close your eyes

Set your mind to roam free
my friend
let it wander the stars
and dance the skies

Rest your head on my shoulder
my friend
that is what it is for
The worries can wait
there behind the door

Give your troubles to me
my friend
because I’m stronger
than you, today
let them go far, far away

We Remember #7

We don’t want to forget
so we read
the Names
we sound the bells
we Remember

We don’t want to lose (again)
so we go to the desert
get them their justice
bury our dead
read the Names
sound the bells

We want to honor
so we wrap them
in Flags
gentle their bodies
into hallowed ground
utter prayers
relinquish tears
fight the futility
carry on
build memorials
fight amongst ourselves
drive with the lights on
wonder Why
why can we not live
in co-existence

God does not want this
we do not want this
I do not want this
who wants this?

We do not want to forget (them)
so we read the Names (and weep)
we sound the bells (to their souls)
We Remember (always)

Behind the Glass Wall

(for Michael)
Behind the glass wall
he waits
in the outfield
to catch a fly ball
shoot her to homeplate
winning the game

Behind the glass wall
he waits
by the seashore
waving at gulls
dancing the waves
away from his pant cuffs

Behind the glass wall
he waits
at the schoolyard
to meet his children
carry their bookbags
and detail their day

Behind the glass wall
he waits
for his true love
to unlock the door
and open his heart

Behind the glass wall
he waits
for your heart to
listen to his heart
and know he is there

Behind the glass wall
he waits
calls out your name
with a voice from inside
bangs on the wall
with fists in his mind

Behind the glass wall
he waits
for his angel
to bring him his peace
and lead him away
from behind
the glass wall.

We Remember

Today we mourn the loss
given us that day
we hold our candles high
we bow our heads and pray

We read aloud the names
of everyone we lost
and we don’t forget
the heartbreak or the cost

We miss them all so much
our hearts won’t let them go
holding fast our memories
we feel our teardrops flow

Tomorrow we’ll return
to our normal lives
we’ll put away our sorrow
assume a calm disguise

We’ll close the photo album
and lock our hearts down tight
and pray that next September
we have made this wrong right

Broken Pieces

Broken pieces
litter life’s great hopes
scattered like sparkling
shards of broken glass.
Reflecting and blinding
capable of heat
and cutting deeply.

Wounds
that refuse to heal
leave the scars
that tell a story
no one wants
to read.

Eyes look away
hands offer false
condolensces.
Never touching hearts
that need desperately
the contact
denied them.
Never knowing
the kaliedascope
that lies within.

Don’t

don’t open a door
better left closed
don’t let me imagine
our wonderful tomorrows
don’t pretend to care
after all this time
just tell me
why you never loved
me enough to stay.
