Minstrel Squire

2008 July 6
by sarah flanigan

There was a minstrel squire
who swoon-ded all the dames
And set their hearts afire
though he never named a name

A fascinating fellow
who used his words to cure
the lack of modern mellow
whilst dancing out the door

The colors that he painted
were never seen before
His spirit never tainted
a mixed up metaphor

And yet he came to me
craving him some words
From a long gone melody
known only by the birds

Right then I did discover
what made the maidens swoon
my writer’s heart he did uncover
with his lively squire’s tune

I set my pen to paper
and words did flurry fast
and fighting off the vapors
I hurried toward my task

And now, I tell you maidens
I understand the spell
The magic of his cadence
I’ve come to know too well

And pray us that the squire
does never lay down his pen
and dampen our admire
by becoming one of
Them

Never was a squire more worthy than this smooth tongued one, I whole-heartedly agree Sarah! Nice work – especially fighting off those damned vapors! Love it.

yes indeed, simonne, the vapors must be fought at all costs. :)

haha, cool. i kept thimking of the robin hood cartoon the whole time. i’ve never seen the movie and dont know what its about but the whole squire thing and the picture with the guy in the woods holding a featherpen…. i love the rhythm in the poem too; people don’t use that timing enough anymore.

    hello mrs ott & welcome,
yes, i think you captured the spirit of the poem – a bit tongue in cheek, the robin hood theme playing in the background. :)

i think rhythm can be a wiley creature to deal with when writing – i seem to have a built type that sings along as i write. odd, yes?

curing languid colors, craving bittersweet, swooning vapors… it is a great piece.. but whom is them?

    hello pie & welcome,
based on your question, i am assuming you are a man? :) them is those scaliwags who love us and leave us. thank you for you reading and your kind words.

yep, it’s a lively, lovely poem, true to the spirit of gingatao.

    hello christine & welcome,
you are probably a better judge of that than i – but i had a fun time writing it.
